Why are most tutoring slots online only?

Before the technology was available, like most tutors, I sat next to the student, looking over their shoulder, checking working. Now we look directly at each other whilst sharing an online whiteboard, on which both the student and tutor write. This has had a transformative effect on the way students interact, and they are far more likely to be relaxed when learning, confident to ask more questions, and be better engaged.

The online whiteboard is a better way of recording what has been done over several sessions, and we can quickly go back and revisit a topic from a previous session.

With a bank of worksheets available within a couple of mouse-clicks, we can get example questions on screen instantly.

We can share from several online sources to enhance learning.

Just like online tuition enables me to teach students from all over the UK, parents and students are no longer limited to finding a local tutor.

If you’re unsure as to how it works in practice, the first lesson is free with no further obligation, so both parent and student can see if it’s right for them.

What IT equipment or software do I need?

You’ll need two screens, and the free version of Microsoft Teams installed. We can provide a graphics tablet to make using the online whiteboard easier. We’ll help you through any set-up difficulties, but the two types of setup the majority of our students have are as follows:

Setup 1. A computer with webcam, second screen and Microsoft Teams installed.

Setup 2. A phone or tablet with Microsoft Teams installed for the video chat, and a computer for using the online whiteboard.

What should I look for in a tutor?

Tutoring is an unregulated industry, with different tutors charging different rates for different services. Selecting an appropriate tutor can be a daunting experience. Subject knowledge and knowledge of the curriculum are essential, but you may also wish to ask the following questions:

“How do you prepare for a session with a student?”
”How do you decide which topics to cover each session?”
”How do you assess that learning has taken place?”
”What professional development do you undertake?”
”How do you motivate, or instill confidence in students?”

What if I have to cancel a session?

As long as you cancel before 9am on the day of tuition, there will be no cost incurred. There are usually other slots available before your next scheduled session, and we’re routinely able to fit in the tuition at a later date.

Do you tutor at weekends and school holidays?

We have limited slots available at weekends, and are happy to continue tuition throughout school holidays if required. In fact, some of our most successful students have continued their tuition throughout the school holidays.

How do I decide if you’re the right tutor for my son or daughter?

I’ll always have an informal chat with the parent or carer before embarking on any tuition, and I’ll send a brochure detailing the service. If you’re happy to proceed at this stage, we’ll set up a video or phone call where I can meet with the student to chat about their concerns, and find out a little more about them. If you think we are a good fit, then we’ll arrange a free hour-long session, after which you can decide how you wish to progress.

Is there a minimum contract?

No. You can book as few, or as many slots as you wish.

Are you DBS checked?

Yes.
